How to Read Grilles on Manouke
Complete Guide for Beginners and Advanced Players
What is a Grille?
A Grille is a simplified and very practical way to notate rhythm guitar accompaniment used in Manouche / Gypsy Jazz. Instead of standard notation, it clearly shows when and which chord to play.
1. Top Section – Chord Diagrams
At the top you can see all the chords used in the song with precise finger positions.
2. Main Grille (Timeline)
Each large box represents one bar (measure).
Important Symbols:
| Symbol | Meaning | What to do |
| 𝄎 | Repeat previous rhythm | Play the same rhythm pattern as the previous bar |
| / (diagonal line) | Chord change inside the bar | Change chord in the middle of the bar (usually on beat 3) |
| 𝄽 𝄺 𝄻 | Rest | Stop playing |
| Multiple chords in one box | Chord changes within the bar | Play chords according to the split |
3. Time Signatures
Grilles are not always in 4/4 time. You will also find:
- 4/4 — most common
- 2/4 — short bars
- 3/4 — waltz time
- 6/8 — compound time
The number of boxes in a row indicates the time signature.
4. Song Structure
Scheme: 3x (A → B → T) → A → B → Coda
This tells you how many times each section is repeated.
5. How to Play from a Grille
- Learn all chords from the diagrams at the top.
- Choose your rhythm (most common is ■ × ■ × – "pom-pom").
- Read from left to right, box by box.
- 𝄎 = repeat the previous rhythm.
- Diagonal line = chord change inside the bar.
- Start slowly and gradually increase speed.
Tips for Beginners
- Start with simple downstrokes only (■ ■ ■ ■)
- Then add muting (■ × ■ ×)
- Pay attention to swing feel
- Use a metronome
Happy jamming and keep swinging! 🎸
