About this song

Paquito is a modern Gypsy jazz instrumental closely associated with French guitarist Ninine Garcia, whose recording appeared on the album "My Dream of Love" in 2004. Although Garcia is credited as the composer in some music catalogues, other sources attribute the piece to Alsatian guitarist Paquito Lorier. A 2017 newspaper report, citing Lorier's family, states that he composed the tune during the filming of "Laisse tes mains sur mes hanches" in 2002. The precise authorship remains disputed.

Paquito was composed long after Django Reinhardt's lifetime, and no recording by Django exists. Its connection to him lies in the living tradition of Manouche jazz. Ninine Garcia, son of guitarist Mondine Garcia, grew up surrounded by the music of Saint-Ouen near Paris, where La Chope des Puces became an important meeting place for generations of Gypsy jazz musicians.

Musically, Paquito is a lively minor-key swing with a distinctive, blues-influenced melody. Its short melodic phrases, rhythmic accents and strong dominant-to-tonic resolutions create a memorable theme that can be developed through improvisation. Ninine Garcia's interpretation is particularly notable for its rhythmic chordal embellishments, which add movement and character beyond the main melody.

The piece has become a favourite among contemporary Manouche jazz guitarists. Its combination of a recognizable theme, expressive minor-key harmony and energetic acoustic accompaniment makes it especially suitable for small string ensembles and jam sessions. It demonstrates how the musical language established by Django Reinhardt continues to inspire new compositions rather than simply preserving historical standards.

Interesting facts:

  • Paquito Lorier and Ninine Garcia both appeared as musicians in the 2003 French film "Laisse tes mains sur mes hanches", directed by Chantal Lauby. The soundtrack includes a recording credited to both guitarists titled "Medley de la fête tzigane".
  • Paquito is the second track on Ninine Garcia's 2004 album "My Dream of Love", released by Djaz Records.
  • The piece was included in the 2005 compilation "Jazz Manouche Vol. 1", alongside recordings by Django Reinhardt, Biréli Lagrène, Tchavolo Schmitt and other important artists.
  • Paquito Lorier and his son Sandro have performed internationally, bringing together Gypsy jazz, flamenco, rumba and Latin influences.
  • The tune has also inspired interpretations and transcriptions by modern Gypsy jazz musicians, including guitarist Paulus Schäfer.

Paquito is a reminder that Manouche jazz is not only a historical style associated with Django Reinhardt, but also a creative and evolving musical tradition. Through the musicians who perform and reinterpret it, this modern standard continues to connect generations of guitarists.
