About this song

Bouncin’ Around is an instrumental jazz composition by Belgian trumpeter, arranger and bandleader Gus Deloof, dating from 1937. Today the tune is strongly associated with Django Reinhardt, whose first recording of it has one of the most remarkable stories in his discography.

Django Reinhardt recorded Bouncin’ Around in Paris on 9 September 1937 in a remarkably small trio with Louis “Loulou” Gasté on rhythm guitar and Eugène d’Hellemmes on double bass. With no violin, piano or drums, the recording leaves Django’s guitar completely exposed and gives the performance an unusually direct and spontaneous character.

According to Django researcher and collector François Ravez, Django had never heard the tune before entering the studio. Deloof had only recently composed it, and the piece was apparently still so new that it appeared on the session sheet under the provisional description Rythm in G Minor. Ravez recounts that Deloof simply whistled the melody to Django; a few minutes later Django was recording it.

Musical character:
Bouncin’ Around is a lively minor-key swing tune with a compact melody, strong rhythmic movement and harmony that clearly outlines the changes. Django’s 1937 trio recording is especially striking because of its economy: without a larger ensemble around him, his phrasing, rhythmic drive and ability to immediately develop a newly learned melody become the centre of the performance.

Connection to Manouche Jazz:
The connection is direct through Django’s recording. Although the composition itself belongs to Gus Deloof, Django’s interpretation became one of the principal versions through which the tune entered the Gypsy Jazz repertoire. It is also an unusually vivid example of Django’s legendary musical ear and ability to absorb unfamiliar material almost instantly.

Interesting facts:

  • Bouncin’ Around was composed by Gus Deloof, not Django Reinhardt.
  • Django made his first recording of the tune in Paris on 9 September 1937.
  • The trio consisted only of Django Reinhardt, Louis Gasté and Eugène d’Hellemmes.
  • The recording carries matrix number 0LA 1953-1.
  • According to François Ravez, the composition was so new that Django had never heard it before the session.
  • Ravez recounts that Gus Deloof whistled the melody to Django, who learned it and recorded it only minutes later.
  • The session documentation reportedly used the provisional title Rythm in G Minor rather than Bouncin’ Around.
  • Django recorded another version in 1938 with Philippe Brun’s Swing Band, transforming the intimate trio piece into a large-ensemble jazz arrangement.

Bouncin’ Around is therefore more than just another tune in Django Reinhardt’s discography. If the surviving account of the session is correct, the recording captures Django learning a completely unfamiliar composition almost in real time — hearing a whistled melody, understanding its structure, and turning it within minutes into a finished jazz performance.
